History of the World Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do
Federation
The World Shorin-ryu Karate Federation was created in 1970 to
organize and promote Matsubayashi-ryu Shorin-ryu Karate in the
United States. Hanshi Frank Grant was appointed president. Grand
Master Shoshin Nagamine supported and promoted Hanshi Grant and
the WSKF until the Grand Master's death.
Hanshi Grant has taught Karate for almost 50 years
and presided as president of the WSKF for 30 years and now is the
Chairman of the Board. He has produced many dojo and black belts
around the world.
There is an out of print book that was written by Sensei James
and Brenda Driggs in 1988. This book includes pictures and short biographies of many of the older Black Belts in the WSKF as well as basic information about Shorin-ryu. Unfortunately, not a lot of information seems
to have been published since.
The name Matsubayashi-ryu and the Patch were given to the WSKF to use by
Grand Master Shoshin Nagamine. The trademark that is in effect, since 1995, prohibits people from using these items without permission. This prohibition, according to law, does not apply to organizations or people who were using the name or the patch prior to them being trademarked. This is why you will see a lot of sites using the patch and the name Matsubayshi-ryu
if they were around before 1995.
